We spent two days exploring Amsterdam and really only scratched the surface of things to do in this interesting city. However, we enjoyed our time there and we are glad we put Amsterdam on our itinerary. Accommodation was extrememly expensive and we ended up staying outside of the city at a golf course for a fraction of the cost for something equivilant in the city (about a 30 min bus ride to the city).
So this is our time in Amsterdam in photos!
Wacky Weed Shops
Yes, it is legal to buy cannabis in Amsterdam. A visit to a local cannabis shop will have your mind boggeling with such a huge range of products – brownies, cookies, joints, baggies, lollipops, chocolate and so much more.
Are all drugs legal in Amsterdam?
No. The Dutch have separated drugs into two groups – soft drugs, which include cannabia and hash, and hard drugs such as cocaine, LSD, morphine and heroin. Hard drugs are forbidden in Amsterdam.
Cheese Shops
As you walk around Amsterdam you will stumble across many cheese shops. Apparently Gouda is the most famous Netherlands cheese. Edam is also very popular. Lesser known Dutch cheese includes Geitenkaas (goat cheese), Maasdammer, Boerenkaas, Bleu de Graven and Delft’s Blauw.
All you can eat BBQ ribs
We discovered all you can eat ribs and had an awesome feast! The ribs were delicious and tender!
Canal Cruise
We did a cruise on the canals. You get a great view of the buildings and all of the different types of canal boats.
Museums
Amsterdam has a multitude of museums to visit such as the Cannabis Museum, Anne Frank House, Van Gogh Museum, Sex Museum and the Red Light Secrets – museum of prostitution.
Street Art
I am always on the look out for street art and Amsterdam doesn’t disappoint. Although I really didn’t get to see the best street art that Amsterdam has to offer I did get a taste of it. Check out this post – Amsterdam Street Art – if you want to see more about street art.
Other novelty shops
We saw shops selling all sorts of things. There is a Rubber Ducky Shop – which sells a huge range of rubber duckies, including the “Trump” ducky. And a mask shop that sells masks that are eerily realistic.
De Wallen – The Red Light District
Prostitution is legal in the Netherlands but not on the streets, so the prostitutes stand in the windows of their rooms and display their wares.
Last, but not least….
I think this is the tiniest car I have ever seen!

Pros – Large, modern room. Large modern bathroom with excellent water pressure. Tastefully decorated. Extra pillows and blankets. Comfortable sitting chairs and coffee table. Good TV.
Cons – The location was quite far from Amsterdam, but there were buses close by.
Our verdict – Good value. We thought it was worth the bus ride to have a comfortable room.
