After visiting the Tip of Australia, we sailed around to Seisia and anchored in the bay. Seisia is a lovely spot, well worth stopping for a look around.
Bamaga
The next day we hitched a ride into Bamaga. We met Polly and Gerry at the Bamaga Tavern for lunch and did the grocery shopping. We got a lift back to Seisia by the barman at the Tavern when he overheard us fruitlessly trying to get in touch with the only taxi in town.
That arvo we had sundowners on Thorfinn. It was time to say see ya to Polly and Gerry. We were heading off across the gulf in the morning, and they were off to Thursday Island.
We left Seisia at 0200 and began our 58-hour sail to Gove. We had excellent weather, and because Dwayne was having a nap, I noticed we had a fish on our trolling line and pulled it in. My first catch! When I got the fish up to the boat, I only had a mackerel head! A shark got it! I couldn’t believe it! It stole my dinner. Anyway, I made Crayfish Mornay for dinner instead.
Gove
Fifty-eight hours after we left Seisia, we arrived in Gove. First things first; a visit to the Gove Boat Club. We met Vice Commodore ‘Notch’ and another couple of sailors, Ashley and Veronica.
After a couple of drinks at the boat club, Ashely and Veronica took us to the unofficial yacht club – the shelter on the beach that the ‘live aboards’ use. We met another group of people who were able to impart some local knowledge about the next leg of our trip through the ‘hole in the wall’, etc.
The next day, Ashley and Veronica visited us on Thorfinn. Ashely generously offered to drive Dwayne into town to fill up some fuel tanks. Then, it was off to the club again for a couple of drinks. The Gove Boat Club has a large grassed outdoor area and fabulous views.
We left Gove the following day at 0530 and sailed through the ‘Hole in the wall’. That night, we anchored in Guruliya Bay, Ragagala Island. It was a beautiful spot, and we got to see a crocodile. We stopped at Elcho Island for a few hours the next night, waking at 0130 to get underway again.
A couple of days later, we finally arrived in Darwin. We anchored out from Stokes Hill Wharf to wait until we got our Indonesia cruising permit and visas.
Next up – Darwin
