A stroll along the Port Fairy Wharf is a must!
Previously on our journey… Port Fairy and sailing Cape Jaffa to Portland.
Port Fairy’s wharf area is full of character…. and characters! On a short walk along this beautiful pier, we met a few of the local characters. We came across the Putty’s Pride crew hand-making their crayfish pots on the dock alongside their boat. These “cray” pots are fascinating. We have only utilised metal cray pots to catch crays (actually southern rock lobsters). These pots are made from tree branches which makes them quite unique.
At just the right time, a lucky look into the water revealed an eagle ray swimming by. Then we were informed by a resident that the stingray is a ‘local’ ray that lives in the wharf area…. then he went on to say that there may be more than one ray, all thought of as the said ‘local’ ray!
Another ‘local’ is the seal which hangs out at the boat ramp. It is fed scraps of fish by the fishermen who clean their catch there. The boat ramp was across from Thorfinn, so we got to watch the antics of this seal. If he wasn’t begging scraps from the fishermen, he was teasing the birds with the leftovers. Throwing the titbit in the air and promptly diving back under the water with it just as the gulls swooped.
A Nankeen Night Heron turned up early for his nighttime hunting and posed for me on the pier!
If you visit Port Fairy, don’t miss a walk along the harbour and meet some of the local characters.
Next up… Refuge Cove, Wilson’s Promontory!
