Street art has come a long way from the days of simple graffiti and tags. Street art is booming worldwide! Many cities are embracing this expressive art movement, and Hong Kong has not been left behind. HKwalls is a non-profit organisation that organises an annual street art festival every march in Hong Kong. From these festivals, many creative murals now adorn Hong Kongs streets, laneways and shop-front shutters.
We enjoy hunting down the street art when we visit somewhere new. Not only is it something free to do (great for the budget traveller), but it is also a great way to discover the city as you wander around discovering exciting art and other curiosities.
HKwalls kicked off in 2014 with a festival in the streets of Sheung Wan, which resulted in 17 new artworks. During the March HKwalls festivals, special events, such as street art documentary screenings, paint workshops and print exhibitions occur.
HKwalls has a website where you will find maps to the street art of 2016, 2017 and 2018. Some of the art is hard to find with much of it being down small laneways and on the shop-front shutters – making it impossible to see when the shop is open.
The following areas have the highest concentration of street art in Hong Kong – Sheung Wan, Sham Shui Po, Stanley, Wong Chuk Hang, Sai Ying Pun and Central.

Cost – HK$ 877.50 (AUD 152.00)
Pros – The room was large (for Hong Kong) and very comfortable. Lots of helpful extras such as an iron, hairdryer, wine glasses etc. They have a free shuttle.
Cons – Bathroom a little on the small size, had to walk about 10 minutes to find an ATM and shops.
Our verdict – Lovely little taste of luxury after six weeks sail from Phuket.
Cost – HK$ 390.00/night (AUD 67.50)
Pros – Large room with balcony and seated area. We had a single and double bed. This room is very suitable for disabled people. The staff member we mostly dealt with “Oliver” was extremely friendly and helpful. Great location near Times Square, MTR, Trams and buses. Many shops, restaurants and bars nearby.
Cons – None really
Our verdict – We were given a free upgrade which was absolutely fabulous. The price we paid was actually for the tiny twin room which would have been very cramped with all the luggage we had with us due to sailing from Phuket.
