Tarragona, a coastal gem in Spain’s Catalonia region, is one of those places where history seems to hum beneath your feet. Once the powerful Roman city of Tarraco, it’s now a UNESCO World Heritage Site brimming with ancient ruins, seaside views, and a relaxed Mediterranean vibe that makes it easy to lose track of time.
We didn’t quite know what to expect when we arrived — only what Dwayne had read – that Tarragona was supposed to have “some Roman ruins.” What we found instead was an entire city layered with history: the Amphitheatre and Circus, the colony forum, Romanesque church, and Roman walls peek out from centuries of change.

Our first stop was the Roman Amphitheatre. Built sometime between AD 101 and AD 200, this was once the heart of entertainment in Tarraco, where 14,000 spectators gathered to watch gladiators, wild animal hunts, and even public executions.
Circ Roma (Roman Circus)
The Roman Circus is one of the city’s most fascinating sites, and we enjoyed exploring it. Built in the 1st century AD, it was used for chariot races and was estimated to have held around 30,000 spectators. While much of it now lies beneath the modern city, portions have been excavated to reveal the long, narrow arena where thousands of spectators once cheered.
Walking along the ruins, you can imagine the thunder of hooves and the excitement of the crowds. The track and central spine (the spina) are still visible, giving a clear sense of scale. It’s an incredible glimpse into the social life of ancient Tarraco, and a reminder of how Romans loved their spectacles just as much as we enjoy a stadium today.
Forum Provincial Tarraco (Roman Forum)
Once the administrative and social hub of Tarraco, only fragments remain of this bustling centre of Roman life, including temples, basilicas, and open-air plazas where citizens engaged in political debates and conducted business deals.
We loved how seamlessly the ruins blend into modern Tarragona. You can wander through narrow cobbled streets and suddenly find yourself standing next to a 2,000-year-old column. It feels as if the past never really left — it simply adapted.
Other Ruins and Points of Interest
Muralla de Tarragona (Wall of Tarragona), Torre de les monges (Nun’s Tower at Cira Roma), Torres del pretori (Praetorian Towers), Lloba capitolina (Capitoline Wolf).
Old Town
As we explored the ruins, we wandered through the Old Town, or Part Alta (high part)—a maze of narrow, hilly streets filled with colourful façades, flower pots, and charming tapas bars that are perfect for a midday break.
One notable site to visit in Old Town is the Tarragona Cathedral. It was constructed over a period of more than 160 years and features stunning Gothic and Romanesque architecture. The cathedral is located on the site where a Roman temple dedicated to Jupiter once stood, highlighting the city’s rich historical layers.
Tips for Visiting the Roman Ruins in Tarragona
-
- Wear comfortable shoes – Tarragona’s streets are hilly and often cobbled.
- Go early or late – The ruins are quieter in the early morning or late afternoon, and the light is perfect for photos.
- Stay overnight – We didn’t, but wished we had. There is so much to see and do in Tarragona. It deserves more than a day trip. I would love to see the city at night.
Final Thoughts
Visiting Tarragona feels like stepping through a time portal — one moment you’re gazing at the Mediterranean, the next you’re walking where Roman emperors once ruled. It’s a city that perfectly balances the ancient and the modern, where every corner tells a story and every stone whispers the past.
If you’re planning a trip through Catalonia or along Spain’s coast, don’t skip Tarragona. It’s quieter than Barcelona but equally captivating — especially if you love history, architecture, or simply the feeling of standing somewhere that’s seen two thousand years of life unfold.

We usually book our accommodations through Booking.com. We value the convenience of online booking, and there are typically no hidden fees. Additionally, Booking.com offers a variety of accommodation styles in Tarragona, ensuring you can find the perfect place.
We stayed at Solvo Hotel – Adults only
Solvo Hotel is perfectly positioned on the seafront promenade in Vilanova i la Geltrú, a charming coastal city in Catalonia, Spain, within the province of Barcelona.
Ideally located between Barcelona and Tarragona, it offers easy access to both cities, making it a fantastic base for exploring the region. With convenient public transport connections and just a 1 km walk to the train station, getting around couldn’t be easier.
Pros: clean room, good view, and a good price. The location is good, near the beach and close to restaurants, a minimart and public transport.
Cons: We were told we had one of the best rooms, but when we booked another night, we had to move to a much better room than the first. First room, no fridge and a tiny TV. The second room had a fridge, a bigger TV and a great view.
