Now there is another reason to visit Darwin! Not only is Darwin a melting pot of culture, natural beauty, markets and outdoor activities; it is now very much a place to visit if you are an art lover. Darwin has produced some incredible artists, including, but not limited to, Aboriginal artists. It has always had a rich culture of traditional and contemporary Aboriginal art, and now it has a heterogeneous street art scene.
The first I saw of the street art, which had appeared since my last visit in 2014, was as I sat on the balcony of my hotel room overlooking the city. As I looked out over the cityscape, I saw about a half dozen murals; thus, I decided to go for a walk and see what else I could find. As I weaved my way through the streets of Darwin, I got a good look at the many large murals and noticed many large walls that would be the perfect spot for more art… I honestly do hope so.
I think the City of Darwin sums up Street Art when they say “Public art beautifies and stimulates thinking, giving us a sense of place and how we engage with those spaces”.
Once back in my hotel room, I google-searched Darwin Street Art and discovered that much of the art was produced during the Darwin Street Art Festivals held during 2017, 2018 and 2019. Furthermore, it looks as though there will be another Street Art Festival in 2020. There are maps online to help you find the art, and there is more art spread throughout the suburbs if you are so inclined to find.
The street art is not only in the Darwin CBD. You will find murals in the surrounding suburbs also. Plus there are a lot of sculptures and other art to see as you wander around Darwin. Check out the City of Darwin for a map to the Self Guided Art Walk.
