We arrived in Darwin, from Gove, on the 18th of October, around 1500, after a perfect 17-hour sail. We had been hoping to get to Darwin in time to catch up with our boy Kye who would be there for his footy trip. As it happened, we beat him there by about five hours.
We anchored just out from Stokes Hill Wharf, put the dinghy in and headed to shore to check out some of our old haunts – and some new ones. We headed to the new waterfront precinct and had a look at the wave pool. Before heading to Stocks Hill Wharf for dinner, we stopped at an Irish pub for cider. We both had steaks for dinner at Crustaceans on the Wharf. We could hardly eat any of the steaks. We became full quickly (maybe our bodies are not used to red meat anymore). I ate all the veggies and took the steak home in a doggy bag.
The following morning we caught up with Kye for breakfast in town, and then we caught up with my sister Lissy at Dinah Beach Yacht Club. After a couple of drinks at the club, we went to the Mindil Markets. Mindil markets have always been our favourite, and many of the same stalls were there. We had dinner at the market and watched a band play a couple of songs. It was a two-man band. One guy on the drums and one on the didgeridoo.
We caught up with Kye at the casino the next day before heading down to the wave pool for a swim. I used some of the crayfish we caught (when sailing on the Queensland coast) for dinner and made a salad with a Thai dressing. Later in the week, Dwayne caught some crabs and I made a crab salad.
Humpty Doo Hotel
Lissy, ever generous, let us borrow her car when we needed it. One day we took advantage of it to visit further afield. So after topping up the fuel, we headed out to Humpty Doo to reminisce about packing mangos there in 2004! After a drive around trying to remember where I spent that month sweltering in a shed, we went for lunch at the Humpty Doo Hotel.
Dwayne chose the buffalo burger with the lot. It was delicious, but he was disappointed in the size of the buffalo pattie. I ordered the mini burgers (buffalo, crocodile and barra) and got the better deal! The three burgers weren’t that small and were delicious. I had to share my meal with Dwayne. There was too much for me.
We spent much of our time at the Dinah Beach Yacht Club. Once we became temporary members, we could use the facilities, including free wifi. They have cheap drinks and great meals. The salt and pepper bugs were yummy. We picked up our Indonesian visas yesterday, we just refuelled, and we are on our way finally. Indo, here we come! We have the kids coming to Bali for Christmas. I can’t wait to see them all! With the kids coming to Bali, we again have a deadline to be somewhere. My New Years’ resolution this year will be to have no more deadlines.
