We had sailed from Port Stephens and landed a massive marlin. We arrived in Coffs Harbour and anchored between the jetty and the breakwater at about 1630. As soon as we set the anchor, we had to clean the marlin we’d caught. A big messy job! Our bait board, on which we usually cleaned our fish, was just a little too small (2 metres too small), so we cut the marlin up on the cabin top.
It was dark when we finished bagging over 60 meals of fish and cleaning the deck. It had been a very long day catching the marlin and coping with bad weather without our mainsail. We cooked marlin steaks for dinner and went to bed.
The following day we went into the marina and paid for a couple of nights. We used most of the time at Coffs Harbour doing chores. The people at the marina lent us their ute so we could do a good shop and fill our fuel containers. Over the next few days, Dwayne found someone to help him fix the boom gooseneck, and I did all the washing, cleaned the boat and cooked. I made some nummus (pickled fish) with the small marlin off-cuts.
We met Trevor and Joyce from Gondwana (an Adams 45 similar to Thorfinn) and Paul and Rosemary from Irish Mist. We had them all onboard Thorfinn for dinner…. marlin or course.
Paul and Rosemary left the following day, but we caught up with Trevor and Joyce again on Saturday afternoon for drinks at the yacht club.
Muttonbird Island Nature Reserve
A walk up to the top of Muttonbird Island Nature Reserve gave us some great views of the surrounding area. I was able to photograph a black-shouldered kite.
We spent 5 nights in Coffs Harbour, and on Monday morning, we left for Yamba on the Clarence River.
Next up – Saling the Clarence River!
