Our latest yacht trip, aboard SY Nomad, began in Thailand, took us through Malaysia, Indonesia and Australia during a time when the world became paralysed by fears of coronavirus. Gunshots, lockdowns, enforced quarantine, storm, engine trouble, damaged sails.
Street vendors peddling delicious local balinese foods are a common sight on the streets of Bali. Many of my favourite Balinese foods are sold by street vendors, either from their street stall or food carts. Street foods sold on the streets of Bali, and in fact all of Indonesia, are varied, cheap and tasty.
Munduk in the mountains of Bali is astoundingly clean and tidy, and the local people very friendly. There are many very very cheap things to do in Munduk.
The mountains in Bali are very picturesque with lush forest, clean villages and very friendly people. The waterfalls are wonderful and most are very accessible. Don’t forget to take your swimwear… nothing beats swimming under a waterfall!
The snorkelling and diving in Pulau Weh, and the other islands of the Sabang area, was outstanding! We were truly astounded by the amount of fish, variety of marine life and the size of some of the fish we saw… We saw a manta ray, sharks, nudibranchs, frogmouth fish, ribbon eels and a gargantuan sweetlip. We also saw lionfish, scorpionfish, shrimpfish, long-horned cowfish, peacock manta shrimp, painted lobsters, sea snakes, and the entire star-studded cast of Finding Nemo!
The Sabang Marine Festival – 2016 – was extremely well organised, a lot of fun, and facilitated the healthy and happy mixing of many different cultures. Many organised activities such as cultural performances, a tour of Banda Aceh and the Tsunami museum.
Clearing in and out of customs, pirates, transport, phone and internet, cheap food, shopping, fruit and veg, fuel, hardware, bartering, trading and gifts, as well as some basic Indonesian words to know are covered in this post. It also includes a link to a google map of the anchorages we used which includes information about the holding and the depth of water.
We explore the world by land and by Sea. Our home, and usual mode of transport, is Thorfinn, our Adams-designed yacht. Trains, planes and automobiles get us to all the other destinations!
We share our travel tips, incredible destination, things to see and do, sailing, live-aboard life and cooking on a boat.
