This is just the beginning of our journey. So far, we have sailed from Adelaide to Kangaroo Island and on to Cape Jaffa; read more about that here.
We left Cape Jaffa at 0400 the following day. The swell was up around three metres, and before long, it started raining heavily. I went and had a lie-down and fell promptly to sleep! I woke up later to find that it had turned into a fabulous sunny day. But the swell was still huge!
Fishing
Dwayne had his tuna lures out, and when I spotted a heap of fish jumping out of the water, we headed over to motor around them. We hooked onto a tuna, and Dwayne pulled it in after a little tug-of-war with the fish!
Rivoli Bay
We got into Rivoli Bay, where Dwayne cleaned his tuna while I cooked some sushi rice. Then we enjoyed the tuna sashimi, sushi and grilled. Unfortunately, we were not protected from the swell in Rivoli Bay, and the boat was thrown from side to side. After enjoying the tuna, there was little to do but lie down and read. Sleep that night did not come easy, and staying asleep was impossible as the boat was rocked violently, and everything was banging and clanging on the inside and out.
We left Rivoli Bay at first light in a very thick fog. The fog hung around for a few hours, and then the day proceeded to delight with blue skies and little wind. Unfortunately, that meant we motor-sailed for most of the day, but we were pretty comfortable in a swell of 3 – 3.5 metres. Dwayne cooked a delicious pasta of tuna, garlic, cream and capers for lunch.
Port MacDonnell
During the day, we saw lots of tuna jumping out of the water and plenty of birds. Coming into Port MacDonnell, there was a big swell, which made our entrance a little tricky.
Once we had picked up a mooring, we put the tender in and went ashore. We had a couple of rums before heading back to the boat, where Katrina cooked some tuna steaks, which we enjoyed with chips and salad. The moon was up, and the water inside the breakwater was calm; we couldn’t wait for a good night’s sleep!
We left Port Mac this morning in beautiful weather, albeit very cold.
Today we had an excellent sail for most of the day, our best yet, 7-9knots beam reach. Just perfect. We crossed the border into Victoria this morning. We had a shot of Penny Hill Very Old Fortified to mark the moment.
We have arrived in Portland, and we are looking forward to a pub meal. Next stop is Port Fairy, read more here.
