Our journey begins. After leaving Adelaide on the 4th of May, we sailed to Stansbury before leaving early on Monday morning to sail to Kangaroo Island. We stayed at American River for two nights and spent our days walking. The walk to the old fish cannery was good, albeit not much remains to be seen. At the end of the walk, we came across a cute wallaby that allowed us to get very close for a photoshoot!
Cape Jaffa
On the 7th of May, we sailed to Penneshaw to meet our friend and fellow sailor, Katrina, who’s joining us for three weeks of sailing. We continued our journey the following morning as we sailed for Cape Jaffa. The sail was a little rough, and Katrina and I needed to resort to our seasickness tablets! We arrived at the Cape Jaffa Anchorage around 0230, approximately 16.5 hours after leaving Penneshaw. Hence, we arrived in the dark. We nearly came unstuck as we entered the dark, unknown marina, on the little information we had gained from the marina manager before we left Penneshaw. Note to self… if, when asked, the marina manager does not know what “leads” are, his general information on the safety of entering the marina at night is not to be trusted!
Once inside the entrance to the marina, we were literally blind. The port beacon was not working, and we had run aground before we noticed the dark pole indicating the area we should have stayed left of. Long story short… by 0400, we were safely docked and sipping hot cup-of-soups and Hennessy Cognac.
We woke to rain and wind, so we spent the day on the boat, baking chocolate cake and bread and enjoying a roast chicken dinner with Dick and Kay. They had come up from Adelaide to bring some generator spare parts. The following day was beautiful after the sun had burnt off the fog. We joined Kay at the caravan park to get some washing done, and Kay cooked a delicious meatball curry to share with us for dinner.
