About American River
American River – actually a sea inlet – is located on the western shore of Eastern Cove. It was named American River after a group of American sealers who sheltered there in 1803. In fact, a 35-ton American Schooner the “Independence”, was built there in 1804 by American Sealers & Whalers.
Located just 25 minutes drive from the Penneshaw Ferry Terminal, American River is a small peaceful town surrounded by natural bush, attractive beaches and a lagoon sanctuary area. Moreover, American River is popular for fishing, boating, sailing and bird watching.
Our Visit
We camped at American River for three nights, taking the opportunity to explore the area’s history with a self-guided heritage walk. We also climbed Prospect Hill, had lunch at the Deck Cafe, a feast at the Oyster Farm Shop, and enjoyed some nearby wine tasting. Lastly, we discovered the fight against feral cats with a visit to Feral’s End.
Things to do
Feast on locally farmed oysters, abalini and marron at the Oyster Farm Shop
Dine at The Deck Cafe
Discover the “Rebuild Independence” project
The Independence was the first vessel constructed in South Australian waters. The 35-ton schooner is now being rebuilt entirely by voluntary labour in the RIG Boathouse. Once finished, visitors will be able to climb aboard. At the moment, visitors can see the rebuilding in action and learn all about the vessel and its history.
Enjoy bird watching, walking trails and the area’s history
Learn about Kangaroo Island’s feral cat problem
Feral’s End is what Barry Green, aka the Catman, calls his residence in American River; it doubles as a museum-like shrine to raise awareness about feral cats. This place is not for everyone. Some cat lovers do not agree with Barry’s methods of controlling and hopefully eliminating the island’s feral cat problem, while others applaud his efforts. If you wish to visit Catman, you will know when you have found the place as you will see a tree decorated with cat skulls and the words Feral’s End above the door.
“I don’t hate cats; I just hate the feral ones”, says Barry.
Kangaroo Island is one of five islands in Australia identified by the Federal Government to become feral cat free. In fact, the Kangaroo Island Feral Cat Eradication Program aims to eradicate feral cats from Kangaroo Island by 2030. Read more about the plight of Australia’s wildlife here, here and here.

Savour delicious wines
We took the opportunity to visit Dudley Wines and False Cape Winery for wine tasting, which are both situated on the Dudley Peninsula, not far from the American River. Both wineries have pleasant settings and delicious wines. False Cape has a children’s playground and a small menagerie, while Dudley has spectacular views over the straits and had live music on the day we visited. Our thoughts about camping at American River
Pros – Flush toilets, showers, BBQ. Rubbish bins, allow to have fires, and it is a beautiful place. Full shade most of the time.
Cons – Full shade most of the time (no good for using solar panels).
Our Verdict – The price and facilities are very fair. Furthermore, American River is an excellent place to spend a few days, and it is close to Penneshaw and Kingscote. In short, the campground is good value.

About American River Campground
Located near the American River wharf, the campground is only a short walk from the Oyster Farm Shop, a cafe, and where the “Independence” resides. It is a very shady campground that is awesome for hot summer days, but it is not excellent if you use solar panels to recharge batteries.
There are sites right by the water, and shady picnic tables provide a great place to relax and watch the shorebirds as they feed along the water’s edge. Nearby, there are many walking trails, exciting history to discover and an excellent chance to see the Glossy Black Cockatoo.
