Wine Tasting in Clare Valley – Our Favourite Cellar Doors

While we take a break from working on our boat, we enjoy spending quality time with family and friends in South Australia. One of our favourite activities is wine tasting. South Australia is home to seven major wine regions, as well as many smaller ones.

One of our favourites is the Clare Valley, a stunning region characterised by rolling hills, winding country roads, and rows of vines that produce some of the world’s best wines. Located just over one and a half hours north of Adelaide, the Clare Valley is primarily known for its cool-climate white wines, particularly its Riesling. With over 30 cellar doors spread throughout the valley, it’s an ideal destination for wine enthusiasts, food lovers, and anyone who appreciates leisurely travel through beautiful countryside.

South Australia – The Food and Wine State

South Australia is famous for its wines, offering a diverse range that includes crisp, refreshing whites and bold, full-bodied reds, catering to every taste. In my opinion, South Australia makes some of the finest wine and food available anywhere in the world. The state’s title as Australia’s “food and wine capital” is truly well-deserved.

Australia is the world’s 5th largest wine producer, with approximately 50% of the country’s wine coming from South Australia. Even more remarkable, around 80% of Australia’s premium wine is produced in South Australia, crafted from some of the oldest vines globally. Winemaking has a long history in South Australia, as the first vines are believed to have been planted in 1836 by John Barton Hack in Chichester Gardens, North Adelaide. [Wikipedia].

From the Barossa to McLaren Vale, Coonawarra to Clare, each region has its own story — and Clare Valley is one of our favourites.

About the Clare Valley

The charm of Clare Valley lies not only in its wines but also in its relaxed country hospitality and scenic beauty. It is smaller than some of the other wine regions in the state, which gives it a more intimate and authentic feel. The area is made up of several small towns, including Auburn, Sevenhill, Watervale, and Clare, each with its own unique character.

The Clare Valley region is celebrated for its Rieslings, which are often regarded as some of the finest in the world. But beyond the white wines, Clare Valley also produces outstanding Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Grenache.

If you plan to visit, don’t miss the Riesling Trail—a beautiful 35-kilometre walking and cycling path that connects many of the area’s top wineries, restaurants, and historic sites.

Our Favourite Clare Valley Wineries

We’ve had the pleasure of visiting Clare Valley on multiple occasions and exploring various cellar doors across the region, each offering its own story, personality, and memorable wines. Here are some of our favourites:

Jeanneret Wines

Jeanneret is a welcoming cellar door located in the bushland. Sitting on their spacious deck while enjoying their delicious, robust red wines is truly delightful. The cellar door is particularly renowned for its exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec. Additionally, the nearby Clare Valley Brewing Co. makes it an attractive stop for beer enthusiasts.

What is there? Wine and beer tasting, produce supplies to build your own platter, and gourmet food trucks most weekends (the last time we visited, they had a Thai food truck).

Wine varieties include: Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Semillon, Rosé, Shiraz, Melbec, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache.

Our pick:  Jeanneret Minerva Reserve Cabernet & Jeanneret Melbec

Paulett Wines

Paulett Wines, located in Polish Hill River, offers exceptional wines and stunning views. Their Polish Hill Riesling is iconic—crisp, citrusy, and characterised by the classic minerality of the Clare Valley. Be sure to visit Bush DeVine Café, where you can enjoy dishes made with native Australian ingredients paired with their wines. We have had their shared plate lunch several times, and the food is absolutely outstanding.

What is there?  Wine tasting, Canapé & Wine Flight Tasting Experience, Bush deVine Winery Restaurant (lunch only) – share plates or degustation, beautiful views.

Wine varieties include: Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Chardonnay, Sangiovese, Rosé, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Grenache, Syrah and Muscat.

Our pick: Polish Hill River Riesling & Clare Valley Shiraz

Shut the Gate Wines

Shut the Gate is a welcoming cellar door located in the heart of Clare town. They offer a selection of boutique wines full of personality, including For Love of Riesling and The Forager Shiraz. Additionally, their delightful providore is stocked with local produce and gourmet treats to build your own picnic.

What is there? Wine tasting and the Bliss Garden, where you can enjoy a glass of wine or local craft beer and a gourmet DIY platter.

Wine varieties include: Riesling, Sangiovese, Shiraz and Viognier.

Our pick: The Forager Shiraz & For Love Tempranillo

Eldredge Vineyards

Situated in the Skilly Valley, Eldredge offers breathtaking views and exceptional wines. The Blue Chip Shiraz and Spring Gully Riesling are both highly regarded. The cellar door features a lovely deck with an open fire in winter, and we once enjoyed a tasting on the lawn on a beautiful spring day. It’s an ideal spot to relax with a glass of wine while taking in the scenery.

What is there? Wine tasting, a small Providore Store for DIY platters, functions and events. They often make pizza on weekends. Click here to see what’s on.

Our pick: Blue Chip Shiraz & Reserve Malbec

Reillys Wines

Situated in an adorable 1850s stone cottage, Reilly’s in Mintaro is rich in history. They are known for their Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, both bold and beautifully structured. The attached restaurant serves dishes created with seasonal local produce that perfectly complement the wines.

What is there? Daily wine tasting, cheese platters available Tuesday and Wednesday; restaurant — à la carte Friday to Monday, and 5-course degustation Saturday and Sundays; Heritage BnB Cottages.

Wine varieties include: Riesling, Moscato, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Rosé, Tempranillo, Shiraz, Sangiovese, Sagrantino, Grenache and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Our pick: Reillys Cabernet Sauvignon & Dry Land Fortified Shiraz

Sevenhill Cellars

Sevenhill was established in 1851 by Jesuit priests when they planted vines to produce sacramental wine. It is the oldest winery in the Clare Valley and the only remaining Jesuit-owned winery in Australia. Its rich heritage and spiritual history make it a captivating destination. Visitors can explore the underground cellars as well as the historic church located on-site. Notable wines from Sevenhill include the Inigo Shiraz and the St. Ignatius blend.

What is there? Wine tasting, underground cellar, locally grown & made produce to create your own platter, expansive lawn for a picnic, the walking trail (maps available from cellar door), the oldest vines in the Clare Valley, church, crypt, and old ruins to explore.

Wine varieties include: Riesling, Pinot Gris, Rosé, Grenache, Barbera, Touriga, Viognier, Melbec, Merlot, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Verdelho and Muscadelle.

Good Catholic Girl

A small but passionate producer, Good Catholic Girl creates wines that reflect both the land and local heritage. Their Teresa Shiraz is especially good—bold, spicy, and full of character.

What is there? Wine Tasting

Wine varieties include:  Riesling, Rosé, Shiraz, and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Mitchell Wines

Mitchell Wines’ cellar door is housed in a charming 1890s cottage. Family-owned for three generations, Mitchell Wines emphasises organic and sustainable practices. Their Peppertree Shiraz and Watervale Riesling showcase the quality and consistency of Clare Valley fruit.

Our pick: Mitchell Kinsfolk Grenache & Watervale Riesling

Wines by KT

Produced by winemaker Kerri Thompson (KT), this boutique label celebrates small-batch, handmade wines. The Peglidis Riesling and Melva Riesling are excellent examples of what makes Clare Valley whites so special.

What is there? Wine tasting

Wine varieties include: Riesling, Vermentino, Pinot Gris, Rosé, Grenache, Shiraz, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Our pick: Fortified shiraz & 5452 Shiraz

Pikes Wines

Pikes is a must-visit destination for both wine and beer enthusiasts. They offer an excellent selection of wines and their own brewery. One of their standout offerings is the Traditionale Riesling, which is considered a benchmark for the region—crisp, aromatic, and distinctly representative of Clare. Additionally, the on-site restaurant, Slate, provides a nice setting for lunch.

What is there?  Seated wine tasting, beer tasting, restaurant – lunch and dinner – à la carte or Chef’s Feed Me’ 5-course shared menu, wedding and functions, The Pruner’s Hut Private Lunch experience.

Wine varieties include: Riesling, Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, Albariño, Fiano, Chardonnay, Rosé, Montepulciano, Nero D’Avola, Sangiovese, Grenache, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Melbec, Mourvèdre, Tempranillo and Shiraz.

Sussex Squire Wines

A small, family-owned winery producing premium reds with plenty of personality. Their Reserve Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon are both superb examples of what makes Clare Valley reds so special — bold, elegant, and beautifully balanced. The friendly cellar door team make tasting here a relaxed and genuine experience, and it’s an excellent stop for anyone who enjoys boutique, small-batch wines made with passion.

Wine varieties include: Riesling, Fiano, Rosé, Nero D’Avola, Mataro, Sangiovese, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Melbec and Shiraz.

Whether you are a dedicated wine enthusiast or simply enjoy discovering beautiful places with a delicious glass of wine in hand, the Clare Valley is a region that offers something for everyone. With its welcoming cellar doors, exceptional wines, and relaxed atmosphere, it perfectly combines sophistication with country charm.

If you’re planning a visit, be sure to set aside at least two days to fully appreciate the area; however, you may find that once you arrive, you wish you had planned to stay even longer.
